Year introduced: 2009, One car bids farewell at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a car that made its debut here two years ago: the Audi R15 TDI.

This meant that the front of the R15 was essentially a void, and that opened the door to some significant controversy. Unfortunately for Audi the new car simply could not match the Peugeot 908 on pace, which combined with cooling problems due debris collecting in the cooling ducts, led to a dissapointing performance. To address these issues Audi Sport went back to the drawing board, emerging with the R15+, while based on the same monocoque as the R15 it was heavily modified with an all new aero package and revised power train.

These appendages and this flap effectively form part of the bodywork and their sole purpose is to generate downforce.

His passion for racing began during his work experience in the loom shop of Williams F1 aged 16 and he has been involved in the sport ever since.

In response to losing the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Petit Le Mans to the Peugeot 908s, Audi updated their R15 for the 2010 season, creating the R15 plus. The rule book really defined what the R15+ had to be however; “most of the changes were forced by the regulations for example at the front we had specific symmetrical profile that the regulations allowed before but we had to change the trailing edge” explains Mühlmeier. The smaller engine is pushed further toward the middle of the car than in the R10, resulting in a more neutral weight balance that gives the car better agility around the corners than its predecessor.

The R15, successor to the dominant R10, was introduced by Audi for 2009. The R15 got off to a perfect start by winning the 12 Hours of Sebring, setting a new race record in the process, but then lost in its second entry. Chassis: Carbon fibre monocoque (Dallara) Class: LMP1 “Instead of guiding a lot of air around the car and creating a lot of expensive downforce (and paying the subsequent drag penalty) you guide it through the car” explained Wolfgang Appel at the cars launch in 2009. Sam attended Oxford Brookes University to study Automotive Engineering and has written for many publications since, including Motorsport News and Autosport. 2010 Regulations reduced the size of diesel LMP1 air restrictors and turbocharger boost pressure. The R15 was originally designed with a radical aerodynamic concept focussed on the flowing through the car not over the car. All Rights Reserved, lobb off a few cylinders from its passenger cars.

This was not due to the legality debate rather that in Sebring trim the mesh had been getting damaged and collected debris during the race altering the cars aero balance. © 2020 Chelsea Magazine Company |

We’ll wait and see how the car competes at Sebring on March 21 and Le Mans in June before we get all tech heavy on this car. Take your favorite fandoms with you and never miss a beat. They miss several dozen horsepower,” explains Ralf Jüttner, Technical Director of Audi Sport Team Joest. A slightly modified version will run in the opening ILMC race at Sebring whilst the R18 test programme continues.

The diesel powered R10 car has given Audi three consecutive wins at Le Mans. Audi R15 TDI Engine That new engine is a 5.5 litre V10 diesel engine developed in house by Ullrich Baretsky and his team.

Peugeot ultimately lodged an official protest stating that “It would indeed seem that two features of the Audi R15 – in the configuration in which it was shown at technical scrutineering for the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours on June 8 – do not comply with Article 3.6.2 of the current technical regulations:

- The flap which links the two front wings.
The fuel tank may only hold 65 instead of the previous 81 liters of diesel, the fuel flow restrictor in the autonomous refueling tank was also reduced by five to 28 millimeters. Audi was however forced to completely modify the front section of the R15, and thus major changes downstream. Like its predecessor, the R15 TDI uses a turbocharged diesel engine, although the R15's V10 engine is physically smaller than the R10's V12. - The appendages fixed to the inner surface of the front wings.
